Hoodie PP Sample vs Size Set vs TOP Sample: What Brands Must Approve

Proto, fit, pre-production, size-set and top-of-production samples answer different questions. A hoodie prototype explores design and construction. A fit sample resolves silhouette and measurements. A pre-production sample should represent the locked materials, trims, artwork and workmanship intended for bulk. A size set checks how approved grade rules behave across selected sizes. A TOP sample comes from the production line and checks whether bulk matches the approved standard.

Brands should never approve one stage as a substitute for all the others. Use a stage-specific checklist and route every comment back into the tech pack for the heavyweight hoodie program.

Names vary among suppliers. Define each stage in the purchase order instead of assuming the label has a universal meaning.

Prototype: Learn Before Locking

The prototype can use substitute fabric or trims when the purpose is to test pocket shape, hood construction, panel lines or assembly access. Every substitute must be declared. A different fabric weight or stretch can make fit conclusions provisional.

Review hood volume, neckline entry, shoulder position, armhole, sleeve pitch, body balance, pocket access, rib tension and zipper behavior where applicable. Note whether the silhouette depends on wash, brushing or pressing not yet represented.

Do not spend time judging exact brand color on a development sample made from available stock. Record that color is “for construction only,” then require a separate material approval.

Fit Sample: Approve a Body, Not a Flat Chart

Measure the sample using named points and one method. Then assess it on a fit model representing the target base size. A hoodie can meet flat measurements and still pull at the neck, rotate at the sleeve or collapse at the hem.

Photograph front, side, back and mobility poses. Record the model’s relevant body measurements, sample condition and underlayer. Comments such as “make it bigger” are not actionable; specify the affected measurement, visual goal and any linked pattern change.

ISO 8559-1 provides defined anthropometric measurement concepts for apparel development. The ISO overview supports using consistent body landmarks rather than inventing a fit description for each review.

PP Sample: The Commercial Lock Point

The pre-production sample should use intended fabric, color, rib, drawcord, eyelets, zipper, labels, decoration, thread and finishing recipe unless an exception is formally listed. It is the last responsible point to close mismatches before bulk cutting and sewing.

Verify bill-of-material references against swatches and supplier codes. Check fabric weight only under the agreed conditioning and method. Confirm color under defined lighting. Review shrinkage and appearance after the intended care test. Inspect artwork size, position, ink or embroidery, and verify that the care label is supported by evidence.

For U.S. apparel, the FTC says manufacturers and importers need a reasonable basis for care instructions and must consider the garment as a whole. See the Care Labeling Rule guidance. A fabric test alone may not cover a decorated hoodie with rib, zipper and labels.

Size Set: Test the Grade Rules

A size set does not need every size when the range is large, but it should include sizes that expose grade-rule risk. Select the base, at least one smaller or larger transition and the extremes where proportion changes are greatest. Extended sizes may require separate blocks or nonlinear rules.

Review more than chest width. Hood, neck opening, shoulder, sleeve, cuff, pocket, rib and artwork placement must remain proportional and functional. A logo that is centered on the base size may look too close to an armhole on a small size or too small on an extended size.

ISO 8559-3 explains that body-measurement tables and intervals should reflect target population data and that body shape differs among population groups. The standard overview reinforces why simple percentage scaling is not a fit strategy.

TOP Sample: Prove the Line Followed the Approval

TOP samples should be pulled from actual production, identified by size, color, line or batch and date. Compare them with the sealed PP standard and current tech pack. Check whether bulk fabric, wash, trims, stitch construction and decoration match.

A single perfect TOP does not prove the entire run. Request samples across risk colorways and sizes, then use in-line and final inspection to detect drift. Do not allow a factory-made “TOP” from a separate sample room to stand in for line output.

Keep Material Approvals Separate but Connected

Lab dips, knitdowns, strike-offs, embroidery sew-outs, trim cards and wash panels may be approved before the PP garment. List every approval ID in the PP checklist. A hoodie cannot pass if it contains an unapproved rib, drawcord tip or print even when the silhouette is correct.

Color approval should cover fabric and trims together. Metamerism can make components match under one light and separate under another. Define viewing conditions and permitted range; do not rely on phone photos.

Measurement Control

The tech pack should define point of measure, sample state, garment closure, surface, tension and rounding. Measure after agreed conditioning and after care where relevant. If two teams use different neckline or sleeve points, the tolerance dispute is procedural rather than manufacturing.

Record actual measurements rather than only pass/fail. Trends near one tolerance edge can predict bulk drift. Repeatedly changing the spec to match a sample hides pattern problems.

Comment Discipline and Version Control

Each sample gets a unique version and date. Consolidate comments from design, technical, merchandising and quality teams before sending. Mark each item approve, reject or revise, and distinguish mandatory correction from preference.

Update the tech pack after every accepted change. Do not leave the factory to reconcile comments in email, chat and annotated photos. The approved file needs revision history and named approver.

Use annotated photos for location, but include dimensions and construction wording. Retain the physical approved sample, signed and protected from uncontrolled laundering or wear.

Approval Checklist by Risk

Fit and balance

  • shoulder and neck sit as intended;
  • sleeve pitch and mobility are acceptable;
  • body length, width and hem balance match silhouette;
  • hood does not pull the neckline backward;
  • pocket access and placement work across sizes.

Materials and construction

  • main fabric, rib and lining references match approvals;
  • seams, stitch types and reinforcement follow the pack;
  • zipper, eyelets and drawcord operate safely;
  • wash and finish match the control;
  • measurement and appearance after care are acceptable.

Branding and compliance

  • decoration size, color and location are correct;
  • labels contain approved fiber, origin, identity and care information for target markets;
  • sharp points, loose trims and cord risks are reviewed;
  • packaging, barcode and assortment are verified.

Change Control After PP Approval

Any material, supplier, color recipe, pattern, wash, decoration, trim or construction change after PP approval needs impact review. Decide whether a partial resample, new PP or new size set is required. “Equivalent” material is not automatically equivalent in shrinkage, shade or hand.

Document deviations before bulk. An unauthorized substitution discovered at final inspection is more expensive and may be impossible to correct without remaking goods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a PP sample the same as a fit sample?

No. A fit sample primarily closes shape and measurement. A PP sample should represent locked production materials and workmanship. One garment can serve both purposes only if the scope is explicitly defined and every requirement is met.

Does every size need a size-set sample?

Not always. Select sizes that expose the grade transitions and extremes, based on range risk. The sampling plan must be agreed before approval.

When can bulk begin?

Only after named approvals, outstanding exceptions and commercial authorization are clear. “Proceed pending comments” creates uncontrolled risk unless the exact permitted work is documented.

What if TOP differs from PP?

Stop, quantify the difference and determine its scope. Review line setup, material lot and affected quantity. Do not approve the TOP by changing the master after production has begun.

Final Rule

Approve each sample for the question it was built to answer. Lock fit before using a PP sample as the commercial standard, challenge grade rules with a risk-based size set, and pull TOP pieces from the real line. The result is a traceable path from concept to bulk rather than one attractive hoodie carrying five unsupported approvals.

Archive the path as a release packet: current tech pack, graded measurement chart, BOM, approved material cards, decoration approvals, PP comments, signed sample photos, size-set results, TOP identification and authorized deviations. Give the factory one controlled download or revision, then withdraw superseded files from active use. The packet supports reorders and disputes because it shows not only what the final hoodie looks like, but which evidence allowed the team to move through each production gate.
